Overview
Registered in 1993, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a hybrid of *Hosta ventricosa*. It is visually distinctive for its near-round, cordate-based leaves with very dark green, slightly rippled margins and a subtle sheen on the upper surface, contrasting with a dull underside.
In the Garden
‘Lakeside Black Satin’ forms a clump 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter and 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall, with scapes reaching up to 26 inches (66 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium stature suits the middle of a border or as a specimen in a woodland garden. Companion plants such as ferns or *Heuchera* provide textural contrast, and the cultivar is also suitable for larger containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be browsed by deer and is susceptible to slug damage; monitor and manage as needed.
