Overview
Registered in 2003 by Mary Chastain of Lakeside Acres, this medium-sized hosta cultivar is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, dark green leaves with flat margins and a light twist, combined with a slightly shiny surface on both sides. The leaves are variegated, though the dark green coloration dominates, and the plant is notable as the pod parent of Mary's dark seedling line.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Lakeside Black Mama' forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the dark green leaf color is most pronounced, and pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or astilbes. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrent measures are recommended, as both pests may damage the foliage.
