Overview

Registered in 2001 by originator M. Chastain, *Hosta* 'Lake Superior' is a giant-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. 'Lakeside Ripples'* (pod parent) and a selected blue seedling (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its heavily rippled, blue-green leaves with a dull upper surface and glaucous bloom beneath, forming a large, fast-growing mound.

In the Garden

'Lake Superior' reaches a mature spread of 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and a height of 32 inches (81.3 cm), with scapes rising 34 to 40 inches (86.4 to 101.6 cm) above the foliage. It performs well in almost full sun in Western New York conditions and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones as a specimen or border plant in larger garden spaces. Its substantial size makes it inappropriate for containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, as the large leaves require ample water to maintain turgor. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges; slug control may be necessary in damp conditions, though deer resistance is not documented for this cultivar.
