Overview

Registered in 1998, *Hosta* 'Lake Ontario' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. Its distinguishing feature is a medium green leaf with flat margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside, borne on a mound-like plant that reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

'Lake Ontario' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, where its slow growth rate allows it to maintain a compact, mound-like form over several seasons. At maturity, it forms a clump approximately 2 feet across and 1 foot tall, making it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. Its medium size pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials; it is also appropriate for container culture in shaded patio settings.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Lake Ontario' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for these pests and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
