Overview
Registered in 1998 as a selfed seedling of *Hosta* 'Perry's True Blue', 'Lake Erie' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by its large, dark green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a cordate base. The plant forms a substantial mound reaching 30.5 inches (77.5 cm) in height and 62 inches (157.5 cm) in diameter, with leaf blades measuring up to 14.5 inches (36.8 cm) long and 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide, bearing 16 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Lake Erie' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hosta parentage, where its dark green foliage maintains good color. Its giant stature makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in the middle to back of a shaded border, where it can be paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The mound-like habit and moderate growth rate allow it to fill space without becoming invasive.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural practices or barriers where these pests are prevalent.
