Overview
Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, 'Lake Chautauqua' is a large blue-green hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are the heavily rippled leaf margins and the substantial, upright mound of foliage it produces.
In the Garden
'Lake Chautauqua' forms a large clump reaching 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter and 26.5 inches (67.3 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial blue-green leaves with heavy rippling provide strong textural contrast in the border. The upright habit and large size make it suitable as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed shade garden with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed.
