Overview

Registered in 1980 by A. Arett, this giant hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H. 'Tokudama'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Elegans'* (pollen parent). 'Lady in Waiting' is visually distinctive for its large, blue-green leaves with blue-gray margins, forming a substantial mound 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Lady in Waiting' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage maintains its color intensity. At maturity, this cultivar forms a broad, dense clump suitable for mid-border placement or as a specimen in shaded beds. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its substantial leaf mass.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Lady in Waiting' may require protection from slugs and snails in damp conditions, and deer may browse the foliage in areas where these animals are present.
