Overview

Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'La Donna' is a sport of *H.* 'Dinky Donna' that produces a small, mound-like clump of blue-green foliage. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, measure 3.1 inches (7.9 cm) long by 2.4 inches (6.0 cm) wide, and feature slightly rippled margins with a dull surface above and below; eight pairs of veins are present. The scape reaches up to 11.8 inches (30.0 cm) in height and is green.

In the Garden

This small hosta forms a compact mound 7.9 inches (20.1 cm) tall and 13.8 inches (35.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its notable sun resistance makes it suitable for sites receiving more light than typical for the genus, though it performs best in conditions consistent with other blue-green cultivars. The diminutive size suits rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border, where it can be paired with small ferns or sedges. It is also well adapted to container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. While noted as very sun resistant, plants in full sun may require additional irrigation. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
