Overview

Registered in 1986 by A. Arett and M. Armstrong with the American Hosta Society, 'Krinkled Joy' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its heavily textured, blue-green leaves with pronounced crinkling (the "krinkled" effect) and a broad, slightly lighter blue-green margin.

In the Garden

'Krinkled Joy' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage holds color well. At maturity, it forms a substantial clump approximately 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall, with leaves reaching 10.75 inches (27.3 cm) long and 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) wide. The scapes rise to 24 inches (61.0 cm) and bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer. This cultivar pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its bold, textured leaves. Its large size makes it unsuitable for containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Krinkled Joy' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent. It is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
