Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'King Lizard' is a giant hybrid between *H.* 'Niagara Falls' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Grand Canyon' (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinctive for its massive, heavily corrugated leaves with dark green, heavily rippled margins, a dull surface on both sides, and a broadly ovate shape with a cordate base.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and height of 25 inches (63.5 cm), 'King Lizard' forms a dense, mound-like clump suitable for large shade borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. Its moderate growth rate and substantial leaf texture make it a strong presence in partial to full shade; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its bold foliage. The plant is too large for typical container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the large, textured leaves in typical hosta-growing zones.
