Overview

Registered in 2009 by Japanese breeder K. Watanabe, *Hosta* 'Kinba' is a large, self-pollinated selection of *H. pycnophylla* that forms a dense, fast-growing mound. Its distinctive appearance comes from blue-green foliage with medium green, slightly rippled margins, a dull upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.

In the Garden

'Kinba' reaches 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or for mid-border placement in partial to full shade. The ovate leaves with cordate bases and 9 to 10 vein pairs provide textural contrast alongside ferns, *Heuchera*, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size precludes container use except in very large planters.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Kinba' may require protection from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
