Overview

Registered in 1970 by M. Armstrong, this miniature hybrid of *Hosta nakaiana* is distinguished by its variegated foliage, with dark green margins framing a lighter leaf center. The plant forms a compact mound reaching 3 inches (7.6 cm) in height and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 2 inches (5.1 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, each bearing three vein pairs.

In the Garden

‘Kilowatt’ is well suited to shaded or partially shaded positions in the garden, where its small stature makes it an effective groundcover or edging plant in rock gardens, troughs, or the front of borders. Its miniature size also lends itself to container cultivation. Pair with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella* for textural contrast. The scape reaches up to 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height, bearing flowers typical of the species.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in containers, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, ‘Kilowatt’ is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
