Overview

Registered in 2005 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Kerplunk' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its green leaves with heavily rippled, yellow-gold margins. The foliage is broad lance-shaped, slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with eight pairs of veins and a flat base; the leaf blade is lightly folded and moderately wavy, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide.

In the Garden

'Kerplunk' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The yellow-margined leaves provide contrast against darker green or blue-leaved hostas, and the plant's medium size suits it for border middleground or shaded woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
