Overview
Registered in 1995, *Hosta* 'Hutch' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between a *Hosta* 'Wolcott' seedling (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Piedmont Gold' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive features are the very shiny, light green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a cordate base, combined with a semi-upright growth habit.
In the Garden
'Hutch' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions in shaded or partially shaded beds. Its moderate growth rate and semi-upright foliage allow it to pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant's pale green scapes, 24 to 25 inches (61.0 to 63.5 cm) tall, carry flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Hutch' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are advised in typical hosta-growing zones.
