Overview

Registered in 2015 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Lava Flow', this small cultivar was originated by M. Zilis and registered by J. Schwarz. 'Hula Skirt' is visually distinctive for its narrow, elliptic blue-green leaves with golden yellow to light yellow moderately rippled margins, a combination that imparts a grassy appearance due to the leaf shape and unusual veining.

In the Garden

'Hula Skirt' forms a compact, fast-growing mound reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the leaf color remains truest. Its small size and tidy habit make it well suited for container culture, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border, where it pairs effectively with finer-textured ferns or small woodland perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hosta cultivars.
