Overview

Registered in 1986 by H. Payne and the American Hosta Society, 'Housatonic' is a giant blue-green hosta of unknown parentage. It is visually distinguished by its substantial, slightly undulate leaves and large overall dimensions.

In the Garden

'Housatonic' reaches a mature diameter of 55 inches (139.7 cm) and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with leaf blades measuring 13 inches (33.0 cm) long and 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for the back of a shaded border. It pairs well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, though the thick leaves offer some resistance; deer will browse the plant.
