Overview
Registered in 1993 by H. Gowen, F. Riehl, and R. Benedict, *Hosta* 'Hot Lips' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its creamy white leaf margins contrasting with medium green, slightly rippled centers. The parentage is unknown, but the plant forms a compact mound of dull-surfaced leaves with rounded bases and four to five vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Hot Lips' reaches approximately 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter at maturity. As a small hosta, it is well suited for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs effectively with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Hot Lips' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
