Overview
Registered in 2011 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Hot and Spicy' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its ovate leaves with dark green centers marked by persistent chartreuse streaks and white, slightly rippled margins. The leaf blades are very shiny on both surfaces, with 9 to 10 vein pairs, and measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide.
In the Garden
'Hots and Spicy' forms a mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
