Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Hooter' is a large cultivar distinguished by its upright habit, broadly ovate leaves with creamy white and pale yellow streaked margins, and deep corrugation. The parentage is unknown, but the plant produces green leaves with white-edged scapes and a slightly shiny upper surface.
In the Garden
'Hooter' reaches a mature diameter of 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 15 inches (38.1 cm), with scapes extending 36 to 42 inches (91.4 to 106.7 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its upright, moderate growth rate makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. The large, streaked leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, though the slightly corrugated leaf surface may offer minor resistance.
