Overview
Registered in 2011, 'Holy Toledo' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Christmas Tree Gala' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Big John' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is medio-variegation: a light yellow and light green leaf center framed by a dark green, slightly rippled margin approximately 3.5 to 4 inches (8.9–10.2 cm) wide, a color arrangement considered unique within the genus.
In the Garden
'Holy Toledo' forms an upright clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to dappled shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its broadly ovate, cordate-based leaves (12 inches/30.5 cm long, 9 inches/22.9 cm wide) provide substantial textural contrast. The green scapes, 24 to 36 inches (61.0–91.4 cm) tall, carry pale lavender flowers in midsummer. This cultivar works well as a specimen or in mixed shade borders alongside ferns and heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage accordingly.
