Overview

Registered in 2004 by E. Deckert as a sport of *Hosta* 'Hadspen Blue', 'Holy Grail' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with gold margins and a notable yellowish blue and gray streaking pattern. The foliage exhibits a dull upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the broadly ovate leaves (5 inches long, 3.5 inches wide) have flat bases and moderately flat profiles with 8 to 9 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Holy Grail' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 9 inches in height and 22 inches in diameter, with a slow growth rate that suits it well for shaded borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain distinct without scorching, and pairs effectively with other small hostas or fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The blue-green scapes, 15 to 20 inches tall, carry flowers typical of the genus.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be monitored, particularly on the tender new foliage.
