Overview

Registered in 1986 by E. Fisher and the American Hosta Society, 'Hoarfrost' is a giant hybrid of *Hosta* 'Frances Williams' distinguished by its blue-green foliage with a heavy glaucous bloom on the upper leaf surface, which gives the leaves a frosted, silvery appearance. The leaves measure 12.75 inches (32.4 cm) long by 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide, with blue-green margins and 15 to 18 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 56 inches (142.2 cm) and a height of 32 inches (81.3 cm), making it suitable for use as a specimen or in large border plantings in partial to full shade. Its substantial, glaucous leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that provide contrasting textures and colors.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Hoarfrost' may require protection from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
