Overview
Registered in 1997 by Japanese breeder S. Hirao, 'Hirao Zeus' is a giant blue-green hosta distinguished by its substantial, intensely colored leaves with slightly rippled margins. The foliage is dull on both surfaces and features flat leaf bases, with the plant forming an upright mound reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration is most pronounced. With a moderate growth rate, mature specimens occupy a space roughly 4 feet across, making it suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in the middle to back of a shaded border. Its substantial leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Hirao Zeus' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
