Overview
Registered in 2001 by P. and J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Hirao Monument' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar notable for its heavily rippled, light green leaf margins and a full, mound-like habit. Its pod parent is the species *Hosta rupifraga*; the pollen parent is unknown.
In the Garden
'Hirao Monument' forms a dense, slow-growing mound reaching approximately 44 inches (112 cm) in diameter and 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) in height. The leaves are ovate with flat bases, lightly cupped and corrugated, moderately twisted and wavy, and deeply folded; they display nine prominent vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a very shiny underside. The scapes rise 23 to 27 inches (58 to 69 cm) and bear profuse, pendulant flowers. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size suits border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as foliage may be susceptible to damage.
