Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Hillbilly Blues' is a small-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Hadspen Blue' (pod parent) and *H. kikutii* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the upper surface, forming a compact, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Hillbilly Blues' reaches a mature diameter of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is well-suited to rock gardens, woodland borders, or container plantings due to its small stature. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, or other small hostas that complement its blue foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
