Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Herbie Rocks' is a small, slow-growing variegated cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Colonel Murphy' as the pod parent and an unnamed seedling as the pollen parent. Its most distinctive features are long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a low-arching, strappy growth habit, complemented by burgundy flower scapes.
In the Garden
'Herbie Rocks' reaches a mature diameter of 20 inches (50.8 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with scapes extending 20 to 24 inches (50.8 to 61.0 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its compact size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. The narrow, arching leaves pair well with small ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As a small, slow-growing hosta, it is less prone to heavy slug damage than larger-leaved cultivars but may still require monitoring in damp conditions.
