Overview
Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Herbert' is a giant, mound-forming cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. sieboldiana*. It is visually distinguished by its very large, variegated leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, a dull surface on both sides, and a rounded base.
In the Garden
'Hosta' reaches a mature spread of 58 inches (147.3 cm) and a height of 32 inches (81.3 cm), forming a substantial mound with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and heucheras. Its giant size makes it unsuitable for containers but ideal as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
