Overview
Registered in 1987 by F. Maekawa and the American Hosta Society, 'Helonioides Albopicta' is a small hosta cultivar distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with dark green centers and creamy white margins. The leaf blades measure 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) in length and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in width, with four vein pairs, and the plant forms a compact clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
This small hosta is well-suited for shaded borders, rock gardens, or as a front-of-border specimen, where its narrow leaves and variegation provide textural contrast. Mature plants reach approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 16 inches (40.6 cm) wide, making them appropriate for container cultivation or small spaces. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its compact habit.
Care Notes
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; water regularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges, and monitor for slug damage, which can disfigure the narrow leaves, particularly in damp conditions.
