Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster through the American Hosta Society, 'Hebe Blue' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its medium blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a moderately corrugated, lightly cupped form with slightly rippled margins.
In the Garden
'Hebe Blue' forms a compact, slow-growing mound reaching 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom is best preserved. Its small size makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. Companion plants may include small ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials of similar scale.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaf substance offers moderate resistance to slugs, though standard preventative measures remain advisable in damp conditions.
