Overview
Registered in 1993 by J. Stallcop from originator L. Simpers, *Hosta* 'Heavy Metal' is a large cultivar distinguished by its intensely shiny, medium blue-green leaves with smooth margins and cordate bases. The foliage is notably glossy on the upper surface and slightly reflective beneath, giving the plant a metallic sheen that contrasts with its matte surroundings.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter at maturity, with individual leaves measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the blue-green leaf color is most pronounced and the glossy surface resists scorch. The 24-inch (61 cm) scapes bear lavender flowers in midsummer. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a mixed border, pairing well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Typical hosta-growing zones; like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though the thick, glossy leaves offer moderate resistance.
