Overview
Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Hearts on Fire' is a large, fast-growing cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Swoosh' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Elatior' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its three-color leaf pattern: a creamy white margin, a dark green center, and medium green jetting that bridges the two zones.
In the Garden
This upright, broad plant reaches approximately 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 46 inches (117 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and lightly folded surfaces provide textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The pale green scapes, rising 36 to 40 inches (91 to 102 cm), bear typical lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar may require protection from deer and slugs in garden settings. It performs reliably in typical hosta-growing zones when grown in organically rich, well-drained soil.
