Overview

Registered in 2016, 'Hearts in Motion' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar distinguished by its deeply wavy, moderately twisted, lightly folded leaves of slightly blue-green, which are broadly ovate with cordate bases. The foliage is dull on top with a glaucous bloom underneath, and the scapes bear unusual three-petaled, heart-shaped blooms that echo the cultivar name.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 42 inches (107 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38 cm) in height, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaf color remains most stable, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact, mounded habit also suits larger container plantings.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
