Overview

Registered in 1971 by E. Fisher, this medium-sized cultivar is a hybrid of *Hosta nakaiana*. It is visually distinctive for its cordate (heart-shaped) leaves with medium green margins, a slightly glossy upper surface, and a dull matte underside.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Heartleaf' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions in shade or partial shade. Its compact, mounding habit pairs well with ferns, epimediums, and other woodland perennials. It is not typically recommended for container culture due to its medium size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Slugs and deer may cause damage; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
