Overview

Registered in 2012 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Fat Cat', 'Heartbreaker' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, heavily corrugated leaves that emerge gold with a one-inch-wide light green margin. The leaf blade is flat, cordate at the base, and measures ten inches in both length and width, with twelve pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Heartbreaker' forms a dense mound 14 inches high and 20 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold leaf color is most pronounced, and may be used as a specimen or in mass plantings in woodland gardens and shaded borders. Its substantial size and bold texture make it suitable for pairing with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Heartbreaker' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
