Overview
Registered in 1986 by E. Fisher and the American Hosta Society, 'Headliner' is a giant variegated hosta derived from a hybrid of *H. 'Willy Nilly'*. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of gray-green leaves with slight undulating margins, producing a broad, mounded form that reaches 54 inches (137.2 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Headliner' performs best in partial to full shade, where its large, heavily textured leaves develop their characteristic gray-green coloration and subtle marginal undulations. With a mature spread of over four feet, this giant cultivar serves as an effective specimen or background plant in woodland gardens and shade borders. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its substantial foliage mass.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Headliner' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones, and may require protective measures in areas with high pest pressure.
