Overview
Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Edger', 'Hawkeye' is a small, slow-growing cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad golden yellow margins. The leaf blades measure 10.2 cm long and 8.9 cm wide, with 8 to 9 vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
'Hawkeye' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 16.5 cm and a height of 20.3 cm, with upright foliage forming a compact mound. Its small size and slow growth rate make it well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border, where it pairs effectively with other small hostas or fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns and heucheras. The golden leaf margins will hold best in dappled to moderate shade; excessive sun may cause marginal burn.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage can occur and may require protective measures in susceptible gardens.
