Overview

Registered in 2013 as a sport of a seedling of unknown origin, *Hosta* 'Happy' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its medium blue-green leaves with exceptionally broad creamy white margins, which can reach up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in width. The ovate leaves, measuring 5 inches (12.7 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, are lightly cupped, twisted, folded, and wavy, with a slightly shiny surface on both sides and 6 to 7 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Happy' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and its small size makes it well-suited for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its muted blue-green and white coloration.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Happy' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
