Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Lakeside Cupcake' registered in 2014, 'Half and Half' is a small hosta distinguished by its unusual color reversal: blue-green leaf centers with white margins that invert the typical hosta variegation pattern. The leaf center emerges white and becomes pure white by midsummer, while the margins are dark green and flat, measuring 0.75 to 1.25 inches (1.9 to 3.2 cm) wide.
In the Garden
Reaching 4 inches (10.2 cm) in height and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, this mound-forming hosta is suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade with consistent moisture, typical of small hostas. The creamy white scapes, 10 to 12 inches (25.4 to 30.5 cm) tall, provide subtle vertical interest in midsummer. Companion plants should be selected for contrasting foliage textures and colors that complement the white-centered leaves.
Care Notes
Provide regular water during dry periods; apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Half and Half' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its small size may make protective measures easier to implement.
