Overview

Registered in 2002 by P. Ruh from material originated by H. Hakuyo, *Hosta* 'Hakuyo' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its ovate, intensely corrugated leaves with light green centers, heavily rippled white margins, and a dull white underside that contrasts with the darker upper surface.

In the Garden

'Hakuyo' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter. Its upright leaf habit and arched flower scapes suit it for mid-border positions or as a specimen in part shade to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. The white-backed foliage provides subtle interest when leaves are disturbed by wind or rain, and the plant pairs well with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials of similar scale.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed.
