Overview
Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, 'Grover Cleveland' is a giant blue-green hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are its exceptionally large, ovate leaves with slightly rippled margins and a dull, cupped form, supported by sturdy, upright scapes with a bluish cast.
In the Garden
This cultivar is best suited to partial to full shade, where its substantial blue-green foliage provides a bold textural presence. At maturity, it reaches approximately 34 inches in height and 54 inches in diameter, making it an effective specimen or background plant in large borders. Its moderate growth rate and upright habit allow pairing with finer-textured companions such as ferns or astilbes, though it requires ample space to achieve its full spread.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Grover Cleveland' exhibits sturdy growth, standard precautions against slugs and deer are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
