Overview
Registered in 1979 by F. Shaw and introduced by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'Ground Master' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves with white margins. The leaves are lanceolate, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with 10 pairs of veins, and the white marginal variegation is consistent throughout the growing season.
In the Garden
'Ground Master' forms a compact clump 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter and 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its diminutive size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. Like most hostas, 'Ground Master' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
