Overview

Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, 'Grizzly Bear' is a large, upright hosta distinguished by its broad, long heart-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins. The leaves are broadly ovate with flat bases, lightly cupped, and exhibit a slight shine on both surfaces, with 10 to 11 vein pairs per leaf.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 50 inches (127 cm) and a height of 23 inches (58.4 cm), making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its upright habit and long, reaching leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. It is not recommended for container cultivation due to its large size.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Typical hosta-growing zones apply; slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed.
