Overview
Registered in 2004 by Paul and Jean Ruh, 'Grimes Golden' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinguished by its ovate, dull green leaves with medium gold, slightly rippled margins, forming a compact, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Grimes Golden' reaches a mature diameter of 17 inches (43.2 cm) and a height of 5.5 inches (14.0 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for gold-margined hostas, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers. Its slow growth rate and small size also make it a candidate for trough gardens or miniature hosta collections.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
