Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Embroidery', 'Green Velveteen' is a large, upright-growing cultivar distinguished by its heavily textured, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a notably shiny upper surface. The leaves, reaching 13 inches in length and 8.5 inches in width, taper at the base and contrast with a dull underside, while the plant forms a substantial clump 32 inches in diameter and 16 inches in height.

In the Garden

'Green Velveteen' is suited to partial to full shade, where its glossy foliage and moderate growth rate create a bold textural presence in the border or woodland garden. Its mature dimensions—approximately 2.5 feet wide and 1.3 feet tall—allow it to function as a specimen or mid-border accent, pairing well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The light green scapes, rising 22 to 28 inches, bear typical hosta flowers and add vertical interest in mid-summer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, tender leaves may attract both pests in typical hosta-growing zones.
