Overview

Registered in 1987 by C. Owens, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Neat Splash' (pod parent) and *Hosta plantaginea* (pollen parent). 'Green Marmalade' is distinguished by its glossy, variegated leaves with green mottled margins, a characteristic inherited from its parentage.

In the Garden

'Green Marmalade' forms a clump 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 11.75 inches (29.8 cm) in height, with leaves 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide bearing eight vein pairs. The scape reaches up to 39 inches (99.1 cm) in height. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size suits placement in mixed borders or as a ground cover beneath deciduous trees. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; appropriate control measures may be necessary in affected gardens.
