Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Island Charm' registered in 2000, 'Green Lama' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and dull surface on both sides. Its compact dimensions—9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter—and moderate growth rate make it a tidy specimen for the foreground of shaded borders.

In the Garden

'Green Lama' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains color without scorching. At maturity, the plant forms a dense mound roughly 1 foot tall and 1.5 feet across, with scapes rising 16 to 17 inches (40.6 to 43.2 cm) bearing light purple flowers in midsummer. It pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*, and is well suited to rock gardens or container culture due to its small stature.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Slugs may damage foliage in damp conditions; deer are occasional browsers in typical hosta-growing zones.
