Overview
Registered in 2009, 'Green Heron' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Elatior' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Creme de Menthe' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its substantial, broadly ovate blue-green leaves with cordate bases, flat margins, and a slight glaucous bloom on the upper surface complemented by a moderate glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
'Green Heron' reaches a mature spread of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), with an upright growth habit. Its slow growth rate and large leaf size make it best suited for shaded or partially shaded positions in the landscape, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other broad-leaved woodland perennials. This cultivar is not recommended for container cultivation due to its giant stature.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Green Heron' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
