Overview
Registered in 1979 by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'Green Fountain' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Green Wedge' (pod parent) and *Hosta longipes* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its very shiny, dark green leaf margins and upright, arching foliage habit, which gives the plant a fountain-like appearance.
In the Garden
'Green Fountain' forms a substantial clump reaching approximately 55 inches (140 cm) in diameter and 40 inches (102 cm) in height, making it suitable as a specimen or accent in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Its medium size and bold leaf texture allow it to pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, though it is not compact enough for most containers. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
