Overview
Registered in 2004 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Moonlight Sonata', 'Great River Sonata' is a large cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaf centers with yellow to creamy white margins. The broadly ovate leaves measure 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, with 11 to 12 vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath; the margins are 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide, slightly rippled, and the leaf base is rounded.
In the Garden
'Great River Sonata' forms a substantial clump reaching 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its blue-green foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many broad-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
