Overview

Registered in 2006 as a sport of an unidentified parent, *Hosta* 'Great Escape' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaves with broad, creamy white margins that are fully developed from the start of the growing season. The mound-like plant reaches 3.9 inches (9.9 cm) in height and 11.8 inches (30.0 cm) in diameter, with broadly ovate, lightly wavy leaves measuring 5 inches (12.7 cm) long and 3.1 inches (7.9 cm) wide, featuring 12 to 15 vein pairs and a dull surface on both sides.

In the Garden

'Great Escape' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its color and the white margins remain distinct. With a moderate growth rate and compact dimensions, this cultivar is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or small-scale container plantings. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small sedges complement its low, mounded habit without overwhelming it.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary, as both pests can damage the foliage.
